Publishing and printing industry as a sector
This sector represents both traditional factory industry as well as modern communication industry. The businesses in the sector
• manufacture and publish various printed material
• produce content for electronic media
• develop new communication products.
The share of printed media out of all mass media is still more than 70 per cent. The main products in the sector are newspapers, periodicals, books and printed advertising material.
Large share of small companies
The printing industry employs about 28 000 persons. This number has declined in the past few years.
Most of the companies in the sector are small or medium-size.
• The industry has more than 2 600 companies at about 3 000 locations.
• Two thirds of these companies employ less than five persons.
• The ten largest companies employ 43 % of the personnel and create more than one half of the turnover of the entire sector.
An important part of the Finnish economy
The gross production value of the sector was nearly 4,5 billion euro in 2006 which equals 4-5 per cent of the total of Finnish industry.
The share of exports of the total turnover in the sector is about 6 per cent. The balance of trade in printed material in Finland remains strongly positive.
